“Onna rokudai Eis Yūyūdō’s reprint of GoyŁEHashiguchi’s work of the picture of six beautiful women. This collection is the new edition compiled by Muneshige Narasaki, the director of the Japan Ukiyo-e Society and Doctor of Literature. One should refer to the comments in the Yūyūdō’s edition to get an idea of the difficulty in creating the reprints of Hashiguchi’s woodblock paintings. Here, let us quote from Tanseisha: “Even looking back into the history of Japan’s woodblock paintings, Goyō’s woodblock paintings have a very special status. It reflects all that could be known about Ukiyo-e as the form of art in the Edo period while having, at the same time, the Kyoto-style sophisticated beauty. And different from Kiyokata and Shinsui yet sharing with the delicacy of Shōen. Until today, the reproduction was thought to be nearly impossible due to its artistic nature and the skills demanded by it. However, our company has accomplished this task by making the most of the artifice and the spirit in Kyoto and with the help of the greatest masters in carving and printing, having put all the effort into reproducing (requiring 50 to 60 times a print) with the finest precision in every little detail including its color and excellence. E Considering the fact that the usual number of times required in printing is around 10 times a print, or 20 times at the most, we can understand how much time and effort has been spent on this reprint.
